I often talk bad about dubs. I say the only dubs I watch are long shows I don’t really care much about, like Naruto or Bleach or Fullmetal Alchemist. But that’s not entirely true. I also watch nostalgic dubs, like Outlaw Star, Voltron, Robotech, Tenchi Muyo, Evangelion, Gundam Wing, or DBZ. And what do all of those have in common? They all aired on Toonami (Evangelion aired 2 episodes durring Giant Robot Week, look it up.) Of course, Toonami isn’t QUITE what started my intrest in anime. That started Thanksgiving day 1995, when WBNX TV55 aired several episodes of Sailor Moon. That got me waking up at 5 AM before school to watch it every day, and one of the first things I did on the internet was looking up information on it, which introduced me to such classics as Bubblegum Crisis and Ranma 1/2. Then I started watching Toonami. All those shows I listed above, along with new episodes of Sailor Moon really kickstarted my intrest in anime. Sailor Moon SuperS the movie was my first subbed anime, a VHS i paid 35 bucks for (almost a full month’s allowance!) because the $20 dub VHS wasn’t out at the time. Toonami lead into my watching Cowboy Bebop, Inuyasha, Lupin III, and Case Closed, amoung others, on Adult Swim in high school. I doubt I’d be as into anime as I am if not for Toonami. Even though I’d stopped watching it by the time it ended, I was still crushed by the news, and watched that last broadcast. Saying goodbye to TOM sucked, I’d loved the times they gave him his own mini show, starting with The Intruder, and to see him cast off with his horrible fourth design was an insult. Now, even though I no longer have Dish/Cable/any way to actually watch Toonami, I’m glad it’s returned. Although it’s not the same as before, unlikely to introduce kids to anime like it did when it aired weekday afternoons, it’s always good when anime has a home on American television. I guess the point of this post is to say, Welcome back Toonami. Welcome back, TOM. And Thank You.
